Skin resurfacing can encompass a wide variety of skin concerns and results. More common skin concerns include textural irregularities like wrinkles and acne scars, pigmentation changes like melasma, rosacea, sunspots, or visible blood vessels.

What is the Difference Between Microneedling and the Venus Viva?

In addition, the skin may lose tone, feel less firm, and lose the healthy glow that is evident in younger skin. Treatment of these skin concerns can be treated in many different ways, including laser and light modalities, chemical peels, injectables, and skincare products to treat and prevent.

The latest treatments consist of a treatment that creates a wound in the skin that causes natural healing and rejuvenation. More commonly known as microneedling. SO, what’s the difference in microneedling and the Venus Viva, the next generation of microneedling?

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a procedure that uses a handheld device with tiny needles to puncture the skin and create wounds. The body will respond to these wounds and kick start the healing process, which creates natural collagen production.

Collagen production will help smooth skin texture, fine lines, and scars. This type of treatment includes no heat or energy, and only goes surface-level deep, making it good for fine lines and skin blemishes, but not the best method to treat:

  • Discoloration
  • Pitted scars
  • Broken capillaries
  • Deep wrinkles
  • Other deep damages

The insertion of the needles is different with each type of device. The “roller” types of devices create a large ‘rolling and grabbing’ wound that results in more surface damage and bleeding.

More damage results in higher risk of infection and complications. Plus, the needles will dull over time (ouch!), and there is a concern that the cleaning of the needles may not be sufficient to prevent the spread of bacteria when being used more than once.

A battery or power source automates other microneedling devices. These “pen” type devices are depth adjustable but are also very user-dependent. Some devices also have disposable tips, which help with comfort and decreased infection risk.

What is Venus Viva?

The Venus Viva is a non-surgical treatment that uses tiny pins, not needles, to deliver nano fractional radiofrequency energy into the skin. This technique creates small wounds or channels in the skin that naturally stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin. It also tightens the existing collagen fibers to improve skin laxity, texture, discoloration, scars, fine lines, wrinkles, and rejuvenate skin.

The pins in the Viva treatment head goes deeper into the skin, delivering the majority of the ablative (damaged tissue removal) heat or energy under the skin, resulting in minimal surface damage. So, the Viva treatment not only delivers controlled wounds but also delivers collagen-producing energy (RF) at the same time.

Lastly, the depth and the size of the wound can be controlled by the technician resulting in a totally customizable treatment. The disposable treatment head has 160 pins and can deliver 700 pulses before being discarded. Viva treats more areas of concern than microneedling and is considered the next generation of microneedling.
